The Canna Kitchen | Brighton*

A few weeks ago, a super intriguing email landed in my inbox that completely piqued my attention!

I was asked if I wanted to attend the launch of The Canna Kitchen, the UK’s First Cannabis Infused Restaurant, and, obviously, I absolutely had to go and try it out for myself!

The Canna Kitchen (14 Duke Street, Brighton) is a vegetarian and vegan restaurant and, yes, most of the food is infused with cannabis! Head chef, Charlotte Kjaer aims to create honest, balanced and vibrant food which is infused with legal and non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG & CBN. These are meant to be fab for helping pain modulation, digestion and stress, among other things.

On arrival I was offered a hemp tea, I wasn’t sure but I gave it a go. Verdict? It’s not for me; tasted like wet dirt, but if you’re into your herbal teas, you might enjoy it!

I had a little nose around while catching up with friends. It’s a really lovely inviting area and everything feels cosy and comforting; I love the wood effect round the bar area!!

In addition to the restaurant, there’s also the CBD café upstairs selling infused cakes, drinks and beverages, plus the dispensary which sells organic cannabis based products; ranging from CBD oil and edibles to hemp flower and cosmetics.

I tried some of the ganache brownie, it was delicious!!

The Canna Kitchen also boasts a roof terrace where guests are invited to chill out and vape, it’s a really cute little area, although some of it was blocked off as it wasn’t ready.

After checking out everything on offer upstairs, it was time to head down and try out the canapés. Unfortunately these started going round pretty late, so I only got to try three before I headed home. First up was the wild mushroom and hemp arancini with CBD cashew cheese. I really liked this one as I’m a massive arancini lover. The wild mushroom was delicious But I couldn’t really taste the CBD cashew cheese on top.

Next to come round was the chipotle cauliflower in a hemp and buckwheat batter, with CBD aquafaba aioli and chicory. (Fun fact, aquafaba is the water that chickpeas sit in and can be whisked up to resemble egg whites.) I think this was probably my favourite one and I’m gutted I didn’t get to eat more of these!

Finally I sampled one of the bowl food items; Za’atar roasted cauliflower, hemp heart tabbouleh with CBD tahini cream. As there were only two bowls for our table (there were about 7 of us) I only had a little nibble at a piece of cauliflower with a bit of tahini cream on it. It tasted good, cauliflowery, but good.

In the basement, there’s a log-cabin-style lounge where you can enjoy a non-alcoholic cannabis-infused cocktail. I didn’t head down there so I’m not sure what it looked like. There were also no cocktails on offer as they didn’t have time to make us any. Bit of a shame really.

All in all, it’s a lovely place but I feel like the vibe was a bit too relaxed. The invite said 7pm but I didn’t see any food until about 8:15pm, so I went home feeling pretty tired and hungry. The food I did get to try was absolutely delicious though, I couldn’t fault it all!

The Canna Kitchen is now officially open for business, although there don’t seem to be any prices on their website so I have no idea if it’s actually great value for money or not, sorry 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ I know that on the launch night they were selling tickets for £25 where you got a 3 course meal and a canna mocktail, but I don’t know if this is the general price every night.

Although the idea seems great, I’m not sure it’s somewhere I’d go again. Would you want to go and try it out? Let me know in the comments below 🙂 x
