My Rib Tattoo

If you’ve read my blog before, you might know that I’ve not only written a post about things to think about before you get a tattoo but also a couple of posts on my tattoo laser removal sessions, because I’ve ended up having major tattoo regret!!

This year I decided to really look into getting a cover-up for my rib tattoo as I had the funds and I figured it was about time to finally do something about it.

I really wanted the castle scene from Tangled with all the lanterns floating in the sky so I had a couple of consultations with two really lovely tattooists who do a lot of Disney tattoos.  However, even though I’d had the idea for a few years, the more I thought about it, the more I was convinced I might regret it.  There are some people who can get away with having bright, funky tattoos but I’m not sure I’m one of them lol!

I’d also been toying with the idea of a deer tattoo on my thigh and went for a consultation with Zannie (at Chapter XIII tattoo studio in Brighton) but I really wanted my cover-up before having anything new.  I went back to chat to her to ask her opinion on what she’d do if she was covering it up.  I said I liked the idea of flowers, although I didn’t want the usual roses, lilies, cherry blossoms or peonies.  Zannie suggested tattooing a bouquet of flowers so that the stems would cover up the body quite easily and we went through pictures of flowers on Google until I found some I really liked; anemones and pimpernels.  The pimpernels are a silent shout out to one of my favourite programmes growing up; The Scarlet Pimpernel with Richard E Grant!

I also said that I really liked the lace work style of tattoos so Zannie said we could add some in somewhere πŸ˜€  I put my trust in her and booked an appointment for about 2 weeks later and left her to draw up a design for me πŸ˜€

Tattoo day quickly rolled around and I headed to the studio for a long day of inking.  Thankfully it was a Sunday so it was only me and Zannie; I’m not sure how I’d have coped if the studio was really busy!  It was also the first time I’d seen my design; it was absolutely beautiful and I nearly burst into tears!  This is the best photo I got post-stencil as Zannie was busy setting up.

Four hours after we started, the outline was finished so we stopped for some lunch.  My manager, Katy, came down to visit and brought me some crisps, what an angel β™₯  Zannie and I then headed back down to do the shading and colouring, but unfortunately it didn’t work out that way as it became too excruciating.  Obviously not only do tattoos hurt anyway, but my old, scarred tattoo was being constantly inked over.  I’d also drunk a can of Monster and ended up with the shakes, oops!!  I really wanted to have the tattoo finished in one session, but we agreed that Zannie would finish the shading and I’d have to go back for the colour.  It was getting so sore that I started crying and so, with an hour’s work left to go, Zannie sprayed some numbing spray on the area which stung like an absolute bitch, but it really helped and the time sailed past.  I honestly couldn’t feel the needle at all, it was like magic πŸ˜€  Unfortunately, it only works on skin that’s already been broken, so we couldn’t use it to carry on and get the tattoo finished πŸ™

Almost 10 hours afer I’d walked into the studio, I was back at home and promptly burst into tears; I was cold, exhausted and felt really sick.  J made me pizza and put me to bed but I could only manage one slice πŸ™  Due to the Monster and the adrenaline, I slept really badly that night and in the morning, I felt like cancelling my second appointment to have it finished :'(  But a lovely hot shower, snuggling under a blanket to watch a film and a fab night’s sleep the next evening, I woke up on Tuesday feeling like a new woman and felt excited that I’d only have to wait just over a week to get it all done πŸ™‚

A week and a half later, I went back to get it finished.  A couple of hours, Zannie had said, just a couple of hours …  Four and a half hours later, it was finally finished!!  I had some numbing spray for the last hour again, but there were a few bits where the skin wasn’t broken, so I was tensing a lot as I didn’t know whether it was going to hurt or not; as it turned out, it mostly still hurt!!

I’m completely in love with my tattoo, it looks absolutely stunning and it’s already received so many compliments, especially from people who say they’re not usually fans of tattoos!!  I love how detailed it is and how pretty and feminine it looks β™₯  It’s only if you look really carefully (and in certain positions) that you can see parts of the old tattoo underneath!!  The below pic was taken a week later (and I was pretty cold, hence the goosebumps!)
