La Cave A Fromage | Hove*

La Cave a Fromage is somewhere I’ve been past on the bus many times and have always wanted to go in and try. Recently, I finally got my wish and I headed there with my lovely friend Tania for their fondue night and a long over-due catch-up!

La Cave a Fromage (34-35 Western Road, Hove) is a lovely intimate little place and they also have another restaurant in South Kensington. At the front, there’s a shop front for people wanting to buy cheeses, truffle honey, bread and more 😀

They hold different cheese evenings throughout the week that you can book directly through the restaurants. These include a cheeseboard and wine evening, a raclette night and a journey through France with wine event (all individually priced).

The fondue evening is around £28 per person, which sounds expensive until you realise it’s UNLIMITED fondue. Yep, you read that correctly, you get an unlimited supply of cheese until you can’t possibly eat cheese any more!!

Tania and I were also given a lovely selection of meats to start and a massive basket of bread chunks for dipping. The price also includes two glasses of house wine, although I opted for a lemon and limeade instead.

Once we were ready, our mini table stove was lit and the cheese fondue pot was brought over to our table. The cheese had already been heated so we could tuck straight in. They usually use a mixture of Gruyère (a sweet but slightly salty Swiss cheese), vacherin fribourgeois (a semi-soft Swiss cheese made from raw cow’s milk) and raclette (a semi-hard Swiss cheese) for that really beautiful, perfect-for-fondue, cheese consistency.

There’s a really lovely relaxed vibe in the restaurant and we were really encouraged to take our time. We were told that, if we wanted a little break, we could put the mini stove flame out with a little metal device to stop the cheese from starting to separate. Plus, if we wanted another pot (and another and another), we could just ask and a fresh pot would be brought over to the table 😀

I have to say I was so unbelievably impressed. The meats were so soft and delicate, the bread was seeded which added a little extra dimension, as well as being slightly crunchy on the outside, and the cheese … OH.MY.WORD the cheese was just exquisite. It was a little stringy and thick and goopy and cheesey and melt in the mouth. The only downside to the entire evening is that, embarrassingly, Tania and I only managed one pot before we admitted defeat 😭😭

If you’re a massive cheese fan, like me, this is a must visit restaurant and I definitely want to go back for more fondue 🧀❤️🧀❤️ At the moment the restaurant doesn’t have fondue options for vegans, but they are taking steps to find the perfect vegan cheese for the future!!

*I was very kindly invited for a complementary meal to review but all views, and love of cheese, are my own.

  1. Oh wow, this place looks amazing and really makes me miss cheese. I haven’t been able to eat it in so long due to allergies, but I know a lot of friends that would love this place!

      1. I have! Some of them are vile but I’ve found a good version in Tesco. I’m still on the hunt for a good brie or camembert alternative. x
